Tensile Testing of Polymer Hydrogels
The tensile testing of hydrogels can provide important insight into their material properties for research purposes. Typical specimens are often delicate in nature with low strength values. These tests share a unique set of challenges to ensure accurate results.
The challenges of this testing are:
- Testing in-vitro
- Repeatable strain measurement
- Secure gripping of specimens
Instron® Solution:
- Testing in-vitro – Testing in-vitro ensures that the mechanical properties of natural tissues are maintained and that bio-engineered tissues are tested in their working environment. The BioPuls™ Bath allows for the testing of specimens at in-vivo conditions with an adjustable temperature controller. The bath is also compatible with submersible pneumatic grips and compression platens.
- Repeatable strain measurement – Due to the fragile nature of biological soft tissues, a non-contacting extensometer is the ideal solution. The SVE 2 Non-Contacting Video Extensometer can precisely measure elongation under both standard and in-vitro conditions.
- Secure gripping of specimens – Pneumatic grips are recommended to grip the specimens without tearing or inducing slippage. They allow for adjustable gripping pressure and a choice of face dimensions and surfaces. Typically, surfalloy or flat faces with low grit sandpaper are used for best results.

2710-100 Series Screw Side-Action Grips
Screw side-action grips provide a very simple and efficient method for holding test specimens in a wide range of applications. The dual - acting design of 2710-100 series grips means that jaw faces can be adjusted to accommodate different specimen thicknesses. This ensures that the line of tensile force remains concentric with the grip body. They can be equipped with a selection of interchangeable grip jaw faces in various sizes and choice of surfaces including smooth ground, rubber-coated and serrated. Line contact and special coated faces are also available. The unique ‘snap-on’ jaw face attachment makes changing faces extremely quick and simple.
